In the world of horology, a Master Calendar is a multi-complication movement that gives you the day, the date, and the month all in one timepiece! And every watchmaker worth their salt has made their entries into the Master Calendar category of fine timepieces. Less than one percent of all watches made in the world will give you the day and date and month. And then when you consider that this is being achieved in a mechanical timepiece without the aide of a battery and computer chip, hopefully you will begin to realize what exactly is going on inside that casing in order for the watch to give you all that information. Also, the calendar functions are controlled by recessed pushers in the side of the case as a further indication of the type of engineering in which the Louie was made. The technical achievement speaks for itself with a Master Calendar, and for good measure the Louie also features a 24-hour indicator in the center sub-dial at the six o’clock position as well; however it is the design that gets the headlines here. Starting with the massive 43-millimeter round case milled from a solid bar of only the finest 316L surgical grade stainless steel, the size alone makes it a real head turner. When you walk into a room, people notice this adornment immediately (they can’t help it). But it’s not just the size, it is also due to the very unusual bezel. Looking somewhat like a sprocket or gear, the eye-catching beveled bezel has been designed with a crenellated border reminiscent of the crenellated turrets on top of castles in ancient times when wars and battles were fought with regularity. It almost feel like you are wearing a castle on your wrist when you put on the Louie! The dial has been deeply cut with hydraulic embossing to create layers of depth and angled sun rays in honor of the Sun King. The triple sub-dial design in not only unique in watch-making, but very difficult as an achievement for the movement to accommodate the positioning of the three sub-dials in succession all at the bottom of the watch! The date aperture window is located in a more traditional position just below twelve o’clock. The skeletonized sword blade hands are a fitting complement to the Louie as a reminder of the nobility of the day. This spectacle of a watch is just as stupefying when you turn it over too. Without a doubt, one of the most impressive back views to a timepiece that Stührling Original has ever created, you will be tempted to flip the strap over with its quick release pins and wear the Louis backwards just as a piece of jewelry. It is that stunning. The fantastic screw-in case-back is truly gorgeous with its own crenellated perimeter on the beveled edge. The design of the decoration has a medieval feel to it, and then of course smack dead in the center, we went all out on the movement. The exceptional 22-jewel mechanical self-winding movement is decorated for a king with Côtes de Genève and Perlage on the back plates and a Damier finished rotor with the Stührling signature logo. The crystals are made of Krysterna™ in case you are planning to take this timepiece into battle, and it also yields 50 meters of water resistance just in case you have to swim across a mote.
