Great watch but needs a stopwatch for aviators

Great watch:
br /
br /looks great--I get a lot of comments
br /doesn't need a battery
br /fantastic layout--a lot of info at a glance: date, local zulu times
br /luminous hands
br /slide rule easy to use and numbers won't rub out (like on external bezel ring slide rules)
br /
br /However, for serious aviators:
br /
br /no stopwatch! You will want a stopwatch to go with the slide rule for basic dead reckoning
br /you'll need another light source to read the slide rule if you're flying at night
br /
br /also, the crown has an occasional tendency to work itself loose and you can lose your time hack if you don't tighten it every couple days
br /
br /The closest I've seen to the elusive "perfect aviator's watch"

It get's 4 stars because, well what would you expect, the slide rule is accurate to 2 decimal places. And it could have given you 3. Oh well. If you are using your watch to calculate your arrival time you probably don't really care if you are off by a few minutes.
br /
br /Ok, why is a circular slide rule cool? First, lots of common calculations are really just ratios. Kilometers to miles or statue miles to nautical miles, pounds to Kilograms's. This watch has the markers in the slide rule, so you just align one mark with the number you want to convert and look at the number that the other unit of measure is over and there you are. You do have to keep track of the magnitude of the answer but that's not hard. You can do sq roots but it's a pain. Basic multiplication and division is easy. Doing the approximation for a tip at restraunt, just set the percentage over the "10" mark, and look for you bill at the inside ring, read the tip on the outside ring. No need to even adjust the watch. You can easily set it up before dinner. Note: if you stare at your watch while trying to read the tip value, you may get called "rude" by your date! Better to just overestimate...
br /
br /Downside, if you do not have perfect vision, you'll have a hard time reading the sliderule. Don't even think about doing this while you are driving. My eyes are fine with it in good light.
br /
br /On the other hand, the time hands and numerals are plenty large enough and easy to read. The luminescent marks seem to stay bright for about an hour, which is good enough for us casual night hawks. Otherwise you need a watch that has tritium and who knows whether that will pass airport security these days.
br /
br /One other thing is that the 24 hr inner hand can be easily obscured by the main watch hands. So this feature not very handy as a second timezone clock. It will help you remember the military time, but at say 11:00 you can't see the underlying hand. Not a big thing, and I suppose if you set to say 8 or 9 hours difference it might be more visible.
br /
br /All in all, a cool watch, even if the slide rule control is built for a lefty.

This is the first Citizen brand watch I've ever bought, and so far, it's as good or better quality than more expensive TAGs I've owned. About the only thing missing (aside from a stopwatch, as noted earlier - but that's debatable if you're not a serious aviator) is a sapphire crystal, which would probably prevent scratches a little better than the standard mineral crystal. For this price, though, I'm not complaining.
br /
br /I like the layout, the overall appearance and something else nobody mentioned - the band clasp is a very smart design. Not only does it have something similar to the Rolex "Flip-Lock" clasp, but the main clasp has what can best be described as a squeeze lock, which must be pressed together from the sides of the band to release it from the wrist. This thing isn't coming off accidentally.
br /
br /I got the stainless version, but there is a titanium one available as well as an all-black version. The all black version looked kinda cheap and the titanium was more money, so stainless was the one I chose. Even though I'm not a pilot, the slide rule is functional (perhaps even useful, in some situations) and the instructions for it are easily understood. All that and a five year warranty. And I always equated Citizen with cheaper-made watches - I stand corrected. No regrets.

I first heard about the Eco-Drive watch from Citizen in a magazine ad, and then when I was at the Shore, I saw a display in a jewelry store. That prompted me to research it online. I was fascinated with it, and decided that it was the watch for me. My 2 previous watches had been Seiko, but I was impressed with the fact that the watch is light-powered and never needs a battery. Knowing this sort of gives you a sense of independence, and I liked wearing something that symbolized a work ethic of always being ready for whatever's gonna come. When I received it, I immediately liked that it was a heavier, substantial watch than I was used to. It looks good, and stands out as a unique timepiece. I have the Nighthawk model. I've had it a few weeks, and it is keeping great time. I especially like that the numbers and hands glow in the dark all night, unlike my Seiko which only glowed a couple hours. This is the best watch I have ever owned, and you will surely be impressed with it.

This is my fourth (a fifth, limited-edition is on order) Eco-Drive. I collect a lot of watches but these are some of my favs to actually wear and use. They are the most accurate watches I've ever owned, bar-none. The Nighthawk is solid, well made, and a delight to wear. There are few watches on which I'd change nothing, but this is one. I also got an excellent price and great service. Many thanks!

I ordered a Citizen Nighthawk man's watch and a Citizen ladies watch for my wife and in less than a week I received them both and they were in their proper containers with all the literature that goes with these watches and both watches were beautiful.
br /I followed a Citizen Nighthawk watch in a Ebay auction and it went for more than what I paid for mine here.

Eco-Friendly Watch That Calculates Fuel Consumption, Speed, Arrival time etc...

Sweet watch, I've been wearing mine for 4 months.
br /
br /I'm an Environmental Engineering Student and I also currently own an Omega Speedmaster ($2100 graduation gift from Dad) and a Titanium Pro-Trek Casio Triple Sensor Watch (Compass, Altimeter Temperature $295.00) that I used for my previous job as an outdoors wilderness instructor.
br /
br /Both those watches are extreme (the Casio being too rugged, big and bulky the Omega being very freaking expensive) for everyday use and wanted something that suited my keen personality, short budget and modern taste.
br /
br /I never liked anything in terms of jewelry or watches from department stores or malls, but when I walked into MACY's during Christmas shopping last december at the local mall I saw these Eco-Drive watches for the first time.
br /
br /Citizen makes some ugly and very old fashioned timepieces, yet the Nighthawk Eco-Drive is very different and far more classy than any other Citizen watch on the shelf. I tried it on and was sold.
br /
br /The features are amazing, apart from all the other "timekeeping-based and solar powered-based features you can read about everywhere else on the internet, the Nighthawk also has a multi-functional Slide Rule. This is not really praised or mentioned anywhere else so I will tell you what it is, what it does and why it makes owning this watch very cool!
br /
br /With the slide rule you can calculate your car's fuel consumption, average speed/velocity and the time you will arrive at your destination, you can also multiply and divide numbers, calculate ratio's into percentages, integers and decimals, covert liters to gallons, pounds to kilograms as well as other metric conversions. The slide rule also performs a few more complicated calculations that involve airplanes and nautical vessels that are beyond my understanding.
br /
br /At any rate, these calculations can be done by simply rotating the NightHawk's bezel and matching specific arrows at certain points along the dial. (If you don't believe me, you can download the Nighhawk's PDF manual and read up on it for yourself.)
br /
br /In fact, it is easier than using a calculator and clears up the big mystery of what people used before computers and electronic calculators were invented; they used the "Slide Rule".
br /
br /Being a grad student, I've read about the slide rules in a variety of classes but I never thought that I would own one on my next watch. I also would have never guessed that the slide rule is so efficient and easier to use than the graphics calculators we use in school.
br /
br /The only negatives cocerning the Slide Rule feature on the NightHawk are the numbers on the slide rule dial are small and angled inwards so that they are tricky to read without tilting the watch around to get a good view of the numbers. Also the slide rule only approximates and produces whole numbers for some of the more advanced calculations.
br /
br /
br /Overall, I found that the useful geek-features, outdoorsman durability, everyday comfort and eco-friendliness to be well synthesized in the classy steel body of the Nighthawk Eco-Drive.

The Citizen Ec-Drive Nighthawk is a great watch that looks, feels and performs at a much greater level than its price suggests! Much like an Omega at a price of hundreds less- add that to its eco friendly design and forward styling and you got a hit- big, but not too big- I definitely suggest it

Citizen Eco-drive Nighthawk is a great watch to have. Its craftsmanship is wonderful. Looks awfully nice. I wanted to have the titanium version but was a bit pricy - so ended up with stainless steel one.
br /Keeps perfect time. Eco-drive means no change of battery. One of the big reasons I bought it was the slide rule. Not that I use the slide rule often. However, if you are a fan of slide rule - you will love it. As some other reviewers mentioned it will be good to have stop watch, day, month etc functionalities. But even without all that it is a awfully nice watch to wear.
br /The dial is a bit big and it's a bit heavy. I don't know whether pilots find this useful or not - but if you are a watch lover, it is a great watch to own and wear.

I purchased this watch for my 22 year old son for Christmas. He is graduating from the UofA soon and will make his way out into the business world following graduation. He told me that he would like to have a "nice" watch now. This was quite an unusual request coming from him. As I love watches myself, I decided it had to be very special, so he would love, wear and take care of it! I must have looked at a hundred different watches and even actually purchased another brand at Sears, only to return it. I finally settled on this sweet baby. It really looks great on the wrist. It is a very handsome, heavy and distingushed piece of stainless steel. I was so impressed with this watch, I plan to get one for myself...

I have had this watch for two years now, and it has easily withstood the abuse that I've thrown at it with only a few minor scratches. The crystal is very scratch resistant. The UTC hand is especially useful as a pilot, but the slide rule is so small that you might as well stick to your handheld E6-B when in a vibrating airplane. However, it is legible enough the rest of the time. My watch looks just as classy as the day I bought it.

I got this watch for a present for my husband. All I have to say is: this watch is awesome! Not only does it look nice, but the slide rule makes it cool! You can do all the normal addition/subtraction. It also can convert metric to English and may other functions. It has very bright and easily readable glow in the dark hands. It also had a very large band. Easy to accommodate almost any sized wrist. My husband actually had to remove a few links. This is a beautiful and very interesting looking watch.

Thie is one impressive piece of hardware. It's a little bulky but easy to get used to although it doesn't always fit under my shirt cuffs. The charging system is excellent. The watch gets a lot of notice. The slide rule function is pretty complex to use but it adds to the impressive appearance of the watch. This watch looks much more expensive than it is.

I just love the looks of it. GMT/world watch works nicely for frequent travellers.
br /As for the slide rule... again, I mainly like the way it looks and the 45 degree angled control knob. As far as functionality goes, don't expect too much. The scales are tiny, even if have 20/20 vision you would have hard time reading them in dim light.
br /My only hesitation before buying this watch was the relatively large dial diameter (43mm), but it is not as bad as I thought.
br /Easily 5 stars, esp. considering the price.
br /
br /Also had a Seiko perpetual-calendar, as far as aesthetics - the Seiko doesn't even come close (my taste). It had domed (magnifier) glass over the date window, after few years of wear and tear it got so scratched I literally can't read the date anymore. When it was still clear though, I really liked the fact that it jumped ahead to '1' at the begining of *EVERY* month...
br /The Nighthawk glass face is perfectly flat, this goes nicly with the overall concept of the watch.
br /It'll take some getting used to, moving the date forward on Februaries and 30 day months, but I still like it much better than the Seiko.
br /
br /Will the battery last forever? we'll wait and see.

I've only had the watch for a few weeks but I love it. The slide rule is not really useful as a practical application but can be fun to play with if you have good eyesight. The fact that there are so many numbers for the slide rule makes the watch face somewhat busy and therefore a little hard to read. Otherwise, the Eco-Drive is great, the watch keeps good time, and it looks great.

This watch is very nice looking. I'm unsure how the slide rule, etc. work as I bought it mainly for the it's appearance as I was looking for an aviatior look. It is very substantial in size and appearance and if the quality is like other Citizen watches I've had, I'll be thrilled. I'm very happy about this purchase.

I was looking at a "pilot" watch to wear when I am not actually flying (I have a G-Shock that syncs with the atomic clock already). This does a great job of that. It looks really cool, is light, and significantly less expensive then Citizen Skyhawk. There are some drawbacks to this watch though. I found it hard to set local time and then use the 2nd set of hour hands to set Zulu. It also doesn't have a stop watch.
br /
br /My final verdict is if you want a watch to wear to the club Friday night that looks like pilot watch this is the one to buy. Otherwise if you also want to use it for flying upgrade to the Skyhawk.

I was amazed at the weight of this watch, the thick solid band and just the overal look is amazing. I like very complex faces on watches (so it is hard to tell time at all). I have not played with any of the functions it can do, but I like the look of it. Highly recommend - especially for a bit over $200.

I originally ordered this watch two years ago and never let it leave my wrist until a month ago when I took it off and put it in my golf bag. Well, somehow it managed to get lost and I've been devistated since. So here I am ordering another one.
br /
br /This watch is a high quality stainless piece (or titanium if you can find it) that is just as heavy and substantial as it looks. The case is huge and makes for a rather imposing watch. I looked and researched for 2 months before purchasing this watch the first time. Every jeweler I spoke too recommended that I forget the Tag, Tissot, Omega, and various other brands in favor of Citizen. I was sort of surprised. Well it is the best quality watch I've had with no winding, no battery, and no fuss. Beyond having the bracelet adjusted, there was nothing to it.
br /
br /I cannot wait to receive my second watch! Even now I still cannot find a watch that serves my purposes better or looks as good doing so. I highly recommend this watch, you will enjoy it.

I purchased this watch a couple of years ago and I love it!! This watch is rather large and easy to read, it is very durable and accurate. If you are looking for an exceptional value I would reccomend this watch. As a side note this watch looks grate when the metal bracelet is replaced with a high quality leather band.
My husband loves this!

The Citizen Nighthawk is a nice looking watch with some nice features. I think it's a very good value for the money. The face is a good size and it looks good for either dress or casual. Some reviews state that it's heavy but I don't find it to be too heavy. My other watch is a Seiko automatic which is heavier so perhaps compared to a regular quartz watch this one may be heavy. In my opinion, here are some of the pros and cons.
br /
br /Pros:
br /- No battery required
br /- large face, good look for either dress or casual.
br /- slide rule if you want it.
br /- 24 hour hand can be used to keep time in a different time zone
br /- you can adjust only the hour hand if you want. Very nice feature if you travel frequently.
br /
br /Cons:
br /- bracelet feels pretty cheap. I would have given it five stars except for this.
br /- No day of week. I knew that before I bought it but it's a feature I miss on this watch.

This is simply one of the most beautiful watches I have owned. The attention to detail and finish are top-notch. I have many higher dollar watches, and aesthetically, this tops most of them.
br /
br /I agree, a stopwatch would be a nice addition. I don't know where you would put it.
br /
br /It is massive, but I am too, so I wanted it to be. Some reviewers called it "heavy" but I don't find it particularly so.
br /
br /I'm not giving it five stars because the band feels cheap. It isn't going to break, that's clear. It isn't going to fall off either, with the clasp lock.
br /
br /Regardless, this watch is an immediate favorite of mine. Thanks for offering it at such a great price, Amazon!

The nighthawk is a good quality watch. Great design, good feel, solid weight without being bulky. Watch arrived on time. My only complaint is that when i ordered the watch I requested a new one. When I received it it came in a box that well, quite frankly looked used. When I examined the back of the watch i saw several small scratches. If i wanted to save a few bucks I would have ordered a used one. But I specifically paid more for a new one. That being said I saved 170 dollars off retail. I recently ordered another, different, citizen for my father. If the same problem comes up again, I doubt I will ever use Amazon again.

The watch was very nice for the price. I found the transaction to be very easy and the shipping fast. If you know EXACTLY what watch you want then this is the place to shop. If you are shopping around for the "right watch design" then the pictures are NOT detailed enough to make informed decisions.

Excellent watch- attractive, sturdy, never needs battery, waterproof to 200 metre. Nice to have dual-time feature and circular slide rule. However- slide rule type size a bit small (or my glasses need new batteries).

As a collector I want good service, and that's what I got. I ordered on 12/29 and recived my watch on 1/04 the packing was done good, and the price was great! I had (1) small problem, the thin flim on the back of the watch was not there there were a few minor scraches, I should be able to take care of this myself. I will use this service again. THANKS, Larry

Very elegant watch, has at least four defects. A little too heavy, lacks of an alarm and it would be better if was radiocrontrolled. The calculator is too little to view.

Our watch took 11 days to arrive. A tracking number was not provided until specifically requested through amazon. The only contact options are e-mail or USPS. On this watch's page, it is stated that the warranty is included. It does not however state that it is an "Amazon" warranty and not the Citizen warranty.

I've had this watch for about 5 months now and the threaded crown or body stripped, so the crown no longer locks in place. I've tried contacting Citizen for waranty and they say it's not covered. Citizen claims that I over tightened it or cross-threaded it while screwing down, so it will cost $50-100 to repair.

br /TOTAL JOKE! I'll never purchase a Citizen watch again. I've always thought they were cheap to begin with. This just confirms my thoughts.

I seems like a really copy, I bought this watch because I like so much but I have seen another one the same style only diffrent name and it is called Citizen Men's Eco-Drive promaster with better quality, for example the cover of the machinery is totaly different, the watch has hologram I don't know If there is another model but it seems better than Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Nighthawk Watch #BJ7000-52E that I bought and also there is a card warranty certified (it is like a credit card) and this product does not have it.
