Description:

Take it to the max with the shock-resistant, solar-powered Casio G-Shock GW300A-1V digital sports watch, which offers a wealth of performance timing features and cutting edge technology. The GW300A-1V has a durable black resin case that's topped by a silver bezel with red highlights, and a comfortable black resin strap. It has a 1/100-second stopwatch with a 24-hour measuring capacity and elapsed time, split time, and 1st/2nd place time modes. It also offers such timekeeping functions as 12/24-hour formats, year/month/date/day display (with an autocalendar to the year 2039), daylight savings time on/off, and world time for 26 time zones and 30 cities. It also has 4 independent daily alarms (with a snooze function) and an optional hourly time signal.p It receives a time calibration signal transmitted from Fort Collins, Colorado, and signal reception is possible within a radius of about 2,000 miles from the Fort Collins transmitter. You can choose to automatically receive this signal (once per day at 1 AM) or manually update the G-Shock to the atomic clock. It's solar-powered--charging in either sunlight or indoor light--so you'll never have to deal with changing the battery. It offers water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet), suitable for scuba diving. pcenterimg border="0" src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/watches/atomic.type.US.only.jpg" align="center"/centerp

This is the best watch I've had for everyday use. Never need to adjust the time its always 100% accurate. Alarms work great and no need to reset them daily. Battery is always at full capacity. Cool feature for dark places, the watch can illuminate atomatically when you turn your wrist as if you were reading the time. That works great for movie theaters and such, and can be turned off at the touch of a button.
br /I work in construction and I never take the watch off at work. It's been banged up, rubbed on brick and concrete, and hit with sharp edges. I've had days where I've had to use a chopping gun or a reciprocating saw all day (the vibrations would destroy a normal analog watch)and the watch is always fine. Its been filthy and sweaty from sheet rock and 100 degree days at work, but all it needs is a rinse with soapy water. I've had the watch for over three years and would definitely get another one or two. G-shock has a loyal customer for life.

Like most G-shocks, this is a _big_ wristwatch. The Wave Ceptor works great. I synchronized the watch in the middle of the afternoon in my back yard - it worked great. There was a slip of paper inside the box saying that if you register your watch online you get a free extra year of warranty coverage. Not that you'll need it.
br /
br /The three-step battery charge scale is very convenient. When I took the watch out of the box, it read "Medium", the middle value. All watch functions work at this level.
br /
br /The only things I'd like to see added: a text memo and an alarm that was date-aware.
br /
br /When you put on this watch you can tell it will last through anything my body would, and there aren't that many electronics you can say that about.

I purchased this watch on a lark for $40 from Costco. So far, looks and feels like a quality timepiece- a smaller footprint than other G-Shocks in my watch collection. I like the large display. I was a little surprised that I had to read the manual to understand some of the capabilities of the watch. I am a little disappointed in the design of the buttons- they are recessed and difficult to push.

This watch is all around the best watch I have owned, and I have owned many. There really are only two down sides to this watch:
br /1. Does not really look good when you are wearing a suit. So I go w/out on those days.
br /2. The buttons in the beginning are hard to press.
br /
br /Other than that, the watch is solid as a rock. I figure after the battery dies in 10 years I will just buy a new watch/model instead of a new battery.

Great product, great price. Large display easy on the eyes, overall size smaller than similar models. Still learning about all the feature but happy with initial impressions. Only fault I find is the buttons mentioned by other reviewers are certainly not the easiest to use, other than that a perfect timepiece.

br /
br /Pros:
br /Large numbers
br /Relatively small size for G-Shock
br /Excellent Price
br /Many Features
br /atomic solar- no need to replace battery or worry about changing time.
br /
br /Cons:
br /Side buttons, somewhat difficult to press.
br /Atomic feature doesn't work in my apt., due to the bricks and metal windows. Outside it sets in 2 minutes, which is not a problem.

Love this watch. As stated by others it certainly has tough to push buttons. My only complaints are minor. With all the bells and whistles, I can't believe that it does not have a count-down timer. Also the back light does not stay on long enough to change a setting such as the alarm clock.

Love this watch!

br /2. Solar power
br /3. Night light, with auto wrist motion activation.
br /4. Chronograph (stopwatch)
br /5. Time,date record recording
br /6. Alarm(s)
br /7. Dual time zone
br /8. Water resistant to depths beyond my imagination

br /It's difficult to say anything negative about this timepiece. The price is very reasonable. I suppose it is a tad large. Overall, it's a WINNER.

This Casio has numerous functions, many that may not be used at all or infrequently; I was impressed by the large numbers that made the watch easy to read; the function that a light went on when wrist was turned comes in very handy during theater and movies; the alarm works well, and the automatic time change is useful; as with any watch with multiple functions using them requires both reading and following the directions; the only negative is the almost impossible small print in the direction book; this problem can be solved by those who can download from their computer;

Don't pass this up!!

this is a good watch. rugged, large numerals for someone like me who is on the edge of needing bi-focals. :-)
br /
br /the contact with the nuclear clock works just fine.
br /
br /this watch takes a beating, from bicycle riding, to being hammered during a lacrosse game, to skiing down the slopes.
br /
br /rubber watch bands? eh? never really have liked them...
br /
br /my only fear is that when the watchband breaks, i won't be able to find a suitible replacement. since the watchband and watch are designed to be keep the look and lines of the watch. if/when the watchband goes, i like the velcro strap replacement type bands. the combination of that type of watchband and this watch will not work. it will probably look like a wall clock on my wrist.

Owned this watch for about 5 years...it finally died out on me, but that was because the solar battery ran its course and the recycling charge lifetime on the solar batter was done. But, aside from the solar battery dying out AFTER 5 YEARS, I have NEVER had to take this watch in for any repair whatsoever. Bought it at an outlet store at Macy's back then for 100 bucks. The solar recharging is awesome, I'd just leave it out on the window sill and it'd stay charged. The atomic calibration only worked when I travelled in the U.S. to within the stated range of the station in Colorado. But if I ever needed to change the time all I had to do was select the time zone I was in and it was a snap.
br /
br /As for the durability of this watch, there is no exception with the G-shock series, I have owned many watches (freestyle, fossil, citizen, generic 20 dollar watches at walmart) and there is no other by comparison. I have taken this watch out to paintball, hiking, camping, snorkeling, surfing, swimming, outdoor house work, and it has even been banged by rocks recently, but still this thing just won't quit...the only thing that quit was the solar battery.
br /
br /Highly recommended as I'm getting another G-shock for my next watch.

Only had 1 day but I love it. It came in the box w/ 1/2 a charge and correct time. I slept with it on and it received the Ft. Collins CO time signal in my house under the covers/pillow. I live in Michigan, a long way from CO. The indicator shows if it gets the signal each night. The book says the battery is replaceable when necessary and gives the battery number. I left mine sit in the sun for it's initial full charge per the operation book. This style of G-Shock is easy to read. My only concern is keeping it out from under long sleeves in the winter so it can get light to charge. But if fully charged the book says it will run for months at a time. The polyurethane nice styled wrist band is thicker and more rugged than my last watch which the band broke. Over many years my last 3 watches have been Casio which I expect to stay with.

This Casio G-Shock watch exceeds my expectations. The time keeping is what you would expect as it is radio controlled. The time, day and date are easy to see. Recieving power from both direct and indirect light, outside and inside, is a great advantage. Keep the watch in it's power saving mode (which is set at the factory), but turn off the night light mode which turns on when your wrist is at a certain angle. That function will delete your power into nothing during the night. I would have given this watch five stars, except for the wrist band. It is a very good band, but it is difficult to find any place which can replace it when it it gives out. It would be best if these exact watches should be available in a standard, replaceable, wrist band.

Great concept, not so great execution

I owned one of these watches for almost five years. For that time, it was one of the most versatile and rugged watches I've ever owned. It has a number of features that I used constantly: automatic synchronization with the NIST clock in Fort Collins, CO, solar (actually, any light) charging, water resitance to 200m (so I never had to take it off while kayaking, swimming, bathing my children, etc), four alarms and a snooze alarm. It also had features that I rarely or never used, such as making time records which record the exact time and date of an event at the push of the button, auto-backlight (cool idea, but wears the battery down quickly, especially if you are wearing long sleeves), and the stopwatch (potentially very useful, just never really need one). It lacked one feature which I sorely missed - a countdown timer.
br /
br /I am referring to it in the past tense because, after almost five years, it has died. The battery will no longer recharge. I am currently looking for a replacement battery (since it is solar powered, it does not take standard watch batteries, but a rechargable battery). If I find one, I have no idea how I will install it (I've removed the back cover, and the internal workings appear to be in a sealed unit which is attached to the body). Even if I install it, it may be that it is the solar cells, or some other part, that has failed, so it may not fix it. Since the warranty is only for one year, to have it repaired by Casio would cost $$$ - with shipping, I expect more than just buying a replacement. I guess $10/year is not too much to pay for a good watch, but I had really hoped to have this watch for much longer.
br /
br /I'd have given this watch a 3.5 star rating, if I could have. Felt more comfortable going down a half star than up by that amount.

The watch does everything it says. Its lacks the need for any user input at all. Time updates every morning at 4am here, and its always correct. Easy to read. Very rugged. I normally scratch the crystals on my watches in the first week. This one has been banged around for over a month and not a mark on it.

Great buy. It is a large but extremely functional watch. I set my watch on the window ledge to charge the solar battery. Since then the watch has never dipped below medium power. Also the watch automatically adjusted during daylight savings time.

All in all the watch performed as described by Casio. My purchase was motivated by the desire for solar powering and expanded features over my older Casio. However, I encountered some troubling issues. The multi function recessed buttons are confusing, and difficult to access and/or switch among the various functions. This was especially tricky when exercising or under cold conditions when dexterity is essential. Manual use of the RCI function was erratic, with more "ERR" displays than expected. This was evident even when the watch was positioned toward the sky and stationery, exactly as outlined in the instructions. I expect the auto RCI function is equally unreliable. And like all Casio watches, the instructions came folded in compact mass with very tiny print. I resorted to downloading instructions from Casio's web site.
br /
br /The bottom line for me is that this watch has most of the bells and whistles an above average outdoors person would seek. However, the ergonomics of the watch leave a lot to be desired. I would only recommend this watch to someone with a lot of patience, superb vision to read the instructions and faith in performance of the watch according to Casio's representations.

Even though the watch is very nice, the rechargeable battery only last about 12 to 18 months. The watch will go from full charge to low, skipping medium and shut down at inopportune times. My first watch I exchanged at Target for a new one. The second one is now also going bad.

This is a great watch! It's easy to read, comfortable to wear and good to look at. With the "atomic" time setting I never have to wonder if the time it shows is right and I don't have to worry about being late for work or an appointment. The watch being solar powered eases the worry about the battery going dead at an inconvenient time. It's really all I need in a reliable time piece.

My watch is pretty new, and my only gripe is typical of Casios in general: too many functions and buttons to push. Took me literally over an hour to get things working to my preferences. But then, you buy Casio knowing the hassles. The solar function should last at least 10 years, IMO, and some non-solar Casios have a 10 year battery, which, given that the solar battery dies in about 5 years, per reports here, is a better way to go. I dont know why all battery watches dont have one! Is it because the watch itself is not expected to last that long? Want a good biz idea? Invent 10 year batteries to replace any and every standard watch battery on the market, for any brand watch. Judging by the reviews here, I do not expect my Casio to last even 5 years, giving new value to my good old Citizen automatic. Then again, it's fun to buy new toys, especially when you "have to".

Good but could be better.

I've had this watch for about six months now. The pros for a watch of this type is solid construction and a strong band. It is also atomic and solar powered, two features that are very nice to have. The biggest negative by far is that pushing any of the buttons (excluding the backlight) is definitely a hassle. The only way I'm able to push the buttons is by using my fingernail. The buttons are too deeply sunk in the housing of the watch for anything else to work. Also, my watch has just recently been having trouble with the atomic timekeeping. For some reason it isn't updating anymore.
br /
br /If casio changed the design of the buttons I would absolutely recommend this watch, but the current design is annoying on a daily basis.

This is a great watch. I particularly like the fact that it is always correct to the second and the solar battery.
br / At first I thought maybe the battery was defective because I could not charge it to the full mark. I found out that it takes about four days of bright light to get it up there. Then it stays at full and you don't have to put it in full sunlight.
br / Glad I purchased this watch.

My 1st G-Shock was an old basic model and I threw it away only because the jeweler couldn't get the back off to replace the battery after 10 years of constant service. It's replacement works fine but on a whim I bought this one. I was intrigued with both the soar power and the atomic time updates.
br /
br /Not counting the solar power and atomic clock functions there are a multitude of reasons that I like this new G-Shock better. To mention only two:
br /
br /- the electroluminescent display is MUCH easier to read at night than the old style lamp
br /
br /- there is a setting that can activated which allows you to activate the electroluminescent display by tilting your wrist 90 degrees. This is disabled if the surroundings are well light.

Though rock-solid (I've been bouncing it off my office wall for the last half an hour and it's still not broken) the G-Shock's solar batteries barely outlast the (one-year) warranty period. That's not to mention that the replacement battery costs more than most watches. Now you see why I'm bouncing it off the wall?

The Casio G Shock used to be a great watch!! I've owned at least 5 of them over the years. (I climb telephone poles and go into manholes, so I'm very hard on watches.) This one is a piece of JUNK!!
br /
br /So what, if it keeps Atomic time? It requires light to charge the cell. I'm not sure if an artificial light source will charge this watch. It didn't seem to charge mine. But, I don't care. I'll never buy a solar watch ever again!! The cell is less than a month old and it's dead. Wait a minute, it's charged up again. No, it's dead again this morning.
br /
br /Someone else said it, "there's no countdown timer."
br /
br /The buttons are recessed, so unless you are a dragonlady with long fingernails, GOOD LUCK with the functions. Then there's a feature that turns on the light in a dark place if you flick your wrist up to read the watch. The light comes on at all kinds of bizarre times when the lights are low and I'm trying to watch something on TV. Then when I flick my wrist up in the dark because I need the light, it doesn't come on. I have to push the light button. Someone said you can turn this feature off. That feature doesn't work, because now the watch IS DEAD!!
br /
br /CASIO is NOW a BOTTOM LINE company. Their watches have gotten cheaper in quality over the years. The bands always need to be replaced and the watches are becoming JUNK!! I won't be buying a G Shock ever again!! Neither should you.
br /
br /BUY A TIMEX!! That's what I did.
