New Citizen Calibre 8651 Classic

This new calibre from Citizen is available in at least six variations, "Classic" case (straight lugs) or "Contemporary" case (curved lugs) in stainless, two-tone, or goldtone. This review applies to the "Classic" two-tone. For a production watch fit and finish are excellent. The bracelet has seven cross links with solid end links providing a comfortable tracking of your wrist shape. The clasp is single deployment fold-over with a dual button release. The bracelet is secured to the case with conventional spring pins but there are ornamental buttons at the lug ends (gold in the two-tone). The case is of classic straight lug shape with a two step bezel. The base is brush finish while the bezels are high polish. The thinner of the two bezels is gold in the two-tone. The mineral crystal is slightly convex providing a small amount of magnification and merges cleanly with the main bezel. The two crowns are slightly recessed and "small" in size. Both crowns are gold in the two-tone.
br /
br /The three o'clock crown is not functional. It acts as a static sleeve for the recessed month adjustment pusher. The four o'clock crown pulls out in the conventional manner. In position one, the moon phase is set via clockwise rotation and the day-of-month is set via counter-clockwise rotation. In the second position the time of day and day of week are simultaneously set by clockwise rotation. See instruction manual for correct sync of day, date, and time functions.
br /
br /The dial is a nice "ivory" tone to my eye. The outer chapter ring has bold black stick markers at the hour positions, normal stick markers at the minute positions, and micro-markers at the quarter minute positions. The next innermost chapter ring has the day of month register (1 to 31) rendered in a very small font on a "gray" background. This proves to be hard to read at a glance. The dial is recessed to accomodate the multiple indicator hands. This can result in a shadowing of the outer chapter rings rendering portions unreadable depending on lighting conditions. Both of these registers would benefit from a re-design to provide better readability. The hour markers are roman numerals, easily read, and appear to be hand applied (gold in the two-tone). The day of week and month registers have nicely shaped black hands which are also easily read. The moon-phase register has a dark blue static area with hand applied gold stars (a very nice touch). The moon phase indicator is the conventional dark-blue sky background with a dark "pumpkin" colored moon. The moon phase indicator is inverted, that is the static sky is at the top and the phase indicator is at the bottom. From an aesthetic and practical point of view this is undesirable and would benefit from a re-design on the next rev of this movement (put phase indicator on top and static sky on bottom just like God intended).
br /
br /The hour and minute hand are nicely shaped gold outline with luminova (or equivalent) in the broad portion of each hand. The second hand is all gold ending in a ball on the short end. The day of month hand is gold with a blue "starburst" pointer (another nice touch). The designers chose to put a small "squiggle"(bend) in the day of month hand, a styleistic touch that escapes me.
br /
br /The movement is the tried and true "Eco-drive" (solar powered) that Citizen introduced many years ago. When you receive the watch it will not be running due to lack of light source in storage and shipping. An initial "charge" of direct light for 4 to 8 hours will get you going. Subsequently 4 or more hours of artificial light or low sun-light per day will sustain operation. Prolonged exposure to light over a period of days results in a "full charge" which will sustain operation for up to six months without further exposure to light. Thus you can store the watch during periods of inactivity without need for a re-charge and reset of time/day/date/moon-phase.
br /
br /This watch is available at very attractive street prices that make it a super value with the fit, finish, and complications that it offers. It is a solid "4 Star" performer.
br /
br /If the chapter ring shadowing and inverted moon phase register are corrected in the next rev, it will be a "5 Star".

This is a watch with many features. It displays not only the day, the date and the month, it displays the current phase of the moon (you have to set it to the correct phase: [...]), so you'll know when the werewolves are out - just kidding! If you have to frequently consult a calendar (like me), this is the watch for you, but not if it's your first watch. You will need to adjust the watch at the end of a thirty day month and at the end of February, so keep the manual handy.
This watch ROCKS!!!

I have had this watch for several months now, and have not taken it off. I was considering the Seiko Kinetic, when Citizen came up with the Eco-Drive. Looking into the differences, I was sold, and have been extremely happy with the decision. The watch is perfect for daily wear, and cleans up rather nicely for formal occaisions. I am giving two Eco-drives as gifts this Christmas, and hope to have another for my collection. A most excellent watch, WELL worth the cost. It does not have the perpetual calendar, so adjusting the date is scheduled for short months. A minimal task.

I have always loved complication timepieces and this one is the best I've owned. I have another Citizen (dive watch with depth indicator)and it's been very accurate over the 10 years I've owned it. I wanted a new watch and 2 things were important; moon phase and no battery replacement. I researched both automatic and electro-mechanical movements and found that in a complication watch electro-mechanical was much less expensive. Naturally, I looked at Citizen and was thrilled to find this watch (unfortunately it's no longer manufactured so hurry if you want one).
br /When it arrived it's look was much more than the picture provided. The low charge indicator told me I needed to charge so I placed it under a light. Upon reading the manual I found that bright sunlight would give it a day's charge in 16 minutes so outside I went. The low charge indicator went to a charged state in 10 seconds and it charged quickly.
br /As with other reviews I must admit that setting the watch is a chore. Some functions set on their own without effecting the others, but most effect other dials so, for instance, if you set the day and then the time set passes midnight you're off a day again and have to start over. Also, I found that the push pin for the month is locked out during certain hours of the day and it can appear as if the watch is broken as the month won't change. If this happens to you just wait till the next day and it will set. Once you've got it set the adjustments for 30 day months and February will be easy.
br /Despite the setting difficulty (which must be expected in a complication watch)it's a magnificent watch which looks beautiful on the wrist and keeps accurate time. When I took it to a watch maker to have the band adjusted his first comment was, "That's a very nice piece." I think that's a great indicator of the quality of this watch.

This is an absolutely gorgeous time piece!! I love the moon phase subdial, the Roman numberals, the "wavy" date hand, the overall layout and color scheme of the main dial, and the link bracelet band. It feels great in my hand and on my wrist.
br /
br /Since it is an Eco-Drive, it keeps nearly perfect time. It's easily charged; no need to leave it out in the sunlight.
br /
br /In conclusion, if you want a beautiful watch that keeps very precise time, this is the watch for you.

I enjoy wearing this watch either to work or out. It has an attractive appearance, and will get many glances. I recommend it to anyone, just be prepared for the intial setup, which takes a little time...between calibrating the moon phase, day, date, etc.

The watch arrived just as pictured. Setting the time, date, day, and moonphase was not difficult. Thus far it has been a great watch, not many other watches out there with quite the same look. What you can't see online in the pictures is the fine detail of the carved metal of the face of the watch. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

br /I wouldn't choose Amazon's Super Saver Shipping though, it took almost two full weeks to arrive.

A truly wonderful combination of advanced solar technology and old-fashioned mechanical compication (or at least the appearance thereof). Seven different counters for seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and moon phase, just like a hideously expensive mechanical Swiss watch, but with the advantages of never needing a battery and having a consistently accurate quartz movement. Only minus is low readability in dim light, but that's inescapable with a multi-dial watch. Excellent aesthetics, unlike overdone nature of competitive items from Seiko (the other premier Japanese line). Great value for the money spent. Kenmar's service was also flawless.

This is my first moonphase watch. I love the Roman numeral face and the eco-drive that power by light. Instruction is clear. Easy to set. Mainly use the lower dial. For the top dial is fixed-- have a tip of a ball-point pen to change the month only on that top dial. The moonphase is pretty neat. I moved the dial a couple rounds to understand how it works. There are 30 clicks (29.5 to be exact) for the cycle of the moon. Fifteen clicks -- complete darkness then another 15 clicks the moon is right at the center. Full moon . I consulted the moon calendar before I set the moonphase. It's so cool ! I would have given a 5 stars rating, except that the watch doesn't have the tritium hour markers for viewing in the dark. In dark viewing, only the hour and minute hands are visible on face. It's a little heavier than my stainless steel Timex -- but it's not much of a big deal. Amazon is has the best price when it's on sales with the free shipping. Come to check requently for Amazon has it on and off. I paid $159 for this watch. Thanks Amazon for the Free Shipping!!

I love the watch. It's very stylish and keeps impeccable time. It's a little complicated to set initially but once you get the hang of it, that's not a problem either. It just looks great and works well. I highly recommend it. Plus I haven't experienced any issues with the watch being solar compared to other watches.

The kids and I bought this as a special birthday gift for my husband who wanted a watch with Roman numerals. The watch is "awesome" (his words)and the eco-drive and moon-phase were just extra special additions. We had it engraved locally, but discovered it can only be done on the clasp as the back has too much imprinted on it to engrave. BTW-- the local jeweler who engraved it would have been happy to special order it for me for just $339!

I would proudly say this is my watch. I always wanted a watch that I could depend on. Not a watch that would depend on me. I have used automatic watches, hand wound watches and normal quartz. Citizen is undoubtedly the best and this is no ordinary product. It is eco-drive and if used properly can work for entire life without stopping. It keeps brilliant time almost like an atomic clock. I have been keeping an eye on its accuracy for the past three months and I have not been disappointed.
br /It can get scratches very easily and that it a negative point. Another negative point is that it is very hard to read time in dark. You have to have a good eye for that. To set the watch is not at all difficult. Just read the manual and set it.

Asi sea. Exitos!!

Citizen is one of the top watch makers and this piece is just another testament to their superior craftsmanship. The watch is incredibly elegant in every detail from the ornate face to the highly polished band. The functions found on the watch are as precise as they are useful. With a continuous calendar (date, day of the week and month) and a tastefully done moon phase calendar this watch has features normally found on watches in classes much higher than citizen.
br /
br /Advice: If you are looking for a classy time piece that can be worn anywhere from formal occasions to everyday endeavors this is a great watch to have. If you do not understand how to set up the functions just take it to a local watch store and they will be more than happy to help you set up the functions and the size.

br /Overall an amazing watch that I would highly recommend!

The watch is nice looking, with a moon phase function, which I wanted. It does not work, however. It keeps time, but I am unable to adjust the date. The book I got with it gave the wrong instructions for the watch I purchased. I'm wondering if this was really a new watch, as advertised. I doubt I'll be buying more watches from Amazon.
